Mail Theft

Mail theft is on the rise, impacting people across the United States. Criminals coat the inside of USPS mailboxes with a sticky substance that catches the letters people drop into the box to be mailed. The thieves then sort through the mail to steal checks, cash, credit cards, gift cards and documents with personally identifiable information.

Check Washing

Check washing often goes hand-in-hand with mail theft. After a thief steals a check, they may use a special process to remove pen ink from the check, rewriting the name (and often, the dollar amount) so they can cash the check themselves.

Preventing Mail Fraud

WPCU provides free certified bins for members to safely dispose of their confidential mail and checks. Another way to prevent mail and check fraud is by using WPCU's Online Bill Pay instead of mailing checks. With WPCU's Mobile and Online Bill Pay, you can safely and securely send a payment to almost any place you would normally pay by check. Just set up your payees and schedule one-time or recurring payments.
